A clear view to the Åland Islands
In the western part of Houtskär, in Jervis, there is a high hill with a great view over the main land. A look-out tower was built on the top of the hill in 1993 and when the weather is good, and the sky is clear you can see all the way to the Åland Islands.
Birdwatchers from all over find this a good place to follow the migratory birds going south in the autumn and returning in spring.
If you arrive in Houtskär by ferry to Kittuis, you will find Borgberg by driving straight forward about 9 km to the village of Träsk. Turn left to Hyppeis at the intersection and continue about 3,5 km until you see a little black sign that says “Borgberg”, after the fields in Jervis. There is a parking lot on both sides of the road on an uphill slope, about 50 metres before the sign.
If you come from Mossala you should drive about 2,5 km from the Kivimo ferry towards the village of Träsk. When you reach the intersection, you will see the sign Näsby-Turku. Turn right and immediately right again, to Hyppeis. Follow the instructions above on how to reach Borgberg by following the road to Jervis.
The path up to the hill is quite steep. There are steps at the most difficult parts, but don’t climb the hill if you have difficulties walking on uneven terrain. In 2023, fitness stairs were built in the area. Now it’s easier to get to the top of the hill.
